Preston Village Cricket Club PV XI v Ross High on Wed 23 May 2007 at
Preston Village Cricket Club Lost By 11 Runs
Here’s how Ross High reported it
The first outing of the clubs cricket section turned out to be a great success when they beat a Preston Village Development XI by 11 runs.
Captain Davie “Boycott” Cribbes immediately showed that he’d been reading up on this cricket lark when he lost the toss but promptly announced to all and sundry that it was nothing but a clever tactical ploy and that he would have batted first anyway. The development team of the cricket club represented the top and bottom end of their squad with 1 first player; ex Ross High centre Scott Russell, a number of juniors and a number of shall we say older players.
The hosts stuck first when Captain Boycott failed to live up to his nametag and departed for a duck. Paul Davis struck a boundary before disappearing and when Turley was undone for 9 Ross High were 18 for 3 and struggling. Michael Patterson then stuck around for 11 priceless runs but unfortunately Craig Patterson and Luke Welsh both chose to follow their captain’s example. In fairness big Welshy did receive an appalling LBW decision from umpire Paul Davis that created a little history as for the first time ever at Preston Village a bowler apologised to the outgoing batsman for the umpire’s decision. Paul maintains it was a reasonable decision although TV evidence later showed it was a good shout on the adjoining pitch.
Ian and Michael Patterson then put 24 on before Patte was out, leaving Patterson and Martin Welsh to put together a stand of 26 before Welshy left for 14. Patterson’s innings came to an end off the penultimate ball of the match leaving Peter Neilson and Stuart Haddow to scamper 3 from the last ball for the Club to set their hosts 87 to win. The suggestion that Patterson snr was as well out of the way as he couldn’t have run 3 from the last ball should have been met with a suitable comment about pre-season training but the old fart had no breath left to argue the point.
Cludge Brogan was the unlucky batsman not given the opportunity to strut his stuff but given his habit of heading cricket balls in practice it was probably a shrewd health and safety move from the captain to put him at number 11.
If the batting had been reasonable the bowling was a revelation, although what it revealed no one is really sure. Preston Village were bowled out for 75 in 19.1 overs. The best of the bowlers were Craig Patterson with 3 for 2 from 3.1 over and Greg Turley with 2 for 11 from 3 overs. In total 9 bowlers were used as only Neilson and Patterson snr were not required. It has to be said that some of the overs were a bit like “Groundhog Day” and probably lasted longer. At one point in Haddow’s over the slip cordon allegedly slipped off for a pint and a curry. However Cribbes’s tactic of switching his attack worked and the team won.
The next scheduled game for the cricket section will be a far more serious outing when they travel to Musselburgh in the East Lothian Cup on the 6th June.
